Urban Marinade

Well, it’s officially 2011 and I’m still behind on keeping this blog updated. Forgive me for that. I suppose I could make “updating my blog more often” a new year’s resolution. What do you think? At any rate, the photos above come from DJ Mag’s No. 8 DJ in the world, Markus Schulz performing with Club Glow at FUR. It was a night that began with an ugly Christmas sweater party and ended around 4 a.m. with Markus closing his set to a still rowdy crowd.

This gallery was pretty important to me because I’ve had an opportunity to photograph Markus on several occasions. In fact, I think he’s probably my most photographed world-class DJ. I first covered one of his shows at the famed Ruby Skye in SF using a crappy point-and-click. And I’ve since photographed three of his shows for Glow and his set at Electric Zoo NYC. The latter of which had images almost (wrong aspect ratio) on Markusschulz.com. So as you can see, it’s important to me to come away with quality shots of Markus. He’s probably my favorite DJ and seriously one of the nicest artists in the business.

You’ll notice from this gallery I tried a few new things and had the pleasure of testing an 85mm f1.8 lens from Samm Q. I absolutely loved the depth of field on that lens. Despite having to stand further away, it creates some incredible close-up profile shots of the artists. I’ve used it since and think it might be worth investing in something similar. All said and done, I had a blast shooting this set of photos. I was able to get the right angles and clarity in my shots while capturing the emotion Markus puts into his set. I hope you enjoy them as well.
