Put on the Gloves

Last week I had a fantastic opportunity to photograph a fashion show at Town Danceboutique benefiting a great cause. The event was titled “Put on the Gloves” and featured works from local and national designers and included a special performance by Grammy Award-winning artist and DC native Mya. All of this was to benefit The Trevor Project and Capitol Queer Prom.
As a photographer who spends the majority of his time in a DJ booth or staring up at some towering skyscraper, fashion was a step outside of my comfort zone. I photographed a Carmen Marc Valvo show in Vegas about a year ago, but never fully focused any attention on runway shows. Things could be changing. The show was fantastic, but what I really enjoyed was the challenge of capturing a moving model in changing light. I also enjoyed capturing that sweet spot where they reach the end of the runway and pose for a sec. Planting myself dead center at the end of the runway didn’t hurt my chances of a great photograph.
At the end of the day, I stepped outside of my photography comfort zone but found enjoyment in something new. Hopefully these images will open some doors to even more fashion related events. See more shots after the break…
